Media Magazine Research

Empire is a British film magazine published monthly by Bauer Consumer Media. From the first issue in July 1989, the magazine back then was edited by Barry McIlheney. It is the biggest selling film magazine in Britain, consistently outselling its nearest market rival Total Film by over two-to-one. Empire organises the annual Empire Awards which are voted for by readers of the magazine.

It has a circulation of 194,016 and reaches out to countries such as Australia and Turkey. The current editor is Mark Dinning. Like most good magazines they have several regular features that you'll find in their issues.  The regular Top 10 feature lists Empire's choice of the top ten examples of something film-related. For example 10 Best Chase Scenes or 10 Best Movie Gags in The Simpsons. Readers are encouraged to write in if they disagree with the choices made. In my magazine I will incoporate a regular feature into it to bring the readers in and to give the magazine some structure, where the readers can always find it.

Total Film is a British film magazine published 13 times a year (every four weeks) by Future Publishing. The magazine was launched in 1997 and offers film, DVD and Blu-ray news, reviews and features. Guest editors have included Peter JacksonKevin Smith, and Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

It is edited by Aubrey Day and is published monthly. I has a circulation of over 85,000. The company that produces the magazine is called 'Future Publishing'. It has several consistent features such as a Total Film quiz, a buzz section where it talks about the latest film news and a lounge section where the magazine reviews all sorts of media products.

To create a high quality media magazine cover for my film, it has to have a strong representative image which the audience can immediately tell the genre of the film. As well as that, the name of the film has to be mentioned, possibly the actors as well.

In this issue the picture can informs us a lot of what the film is about. The fact that it is a solitary picture on the front of the magazine tells us that he is the main character. The mise-en-scene that is his claws tells us that may have a hint of science fiction in it as well as the genre. The look on the models face also confirms that this an action film as it is a serious look. I will apply these features to my film poster as I will have a picture of Hammer on the front of magazine as he is the one and only main character. I will also have a prop in his hand or somewhere in sight so the audience can depict the genre. The prop I will expect to be a weapon, most likely a gun.

The magazine must also have the the name of the film in plain sight so that if the conditions of reception from the audience but first be on a shop shelf. This means that the title must stand out and grab the readers attention. Not only does the title stand out in this, but the magazine keeps to a strict colour scheme. In my magazine, I will make the title stand out from the picture by using certain fonts and colours. I will also try and keep to a certain colour scheme, but i don't know to which as of yet.
